Fibula
The thin fibula is located posterolaterally to the tibia and serves mainly for muscle attachment. It has no weight bearing function. It articulates with the tibia (proximally and distally) and the talus distally.
Proximal Epiphysis
- Fibula Head – irregular shape
- Articular Face for the Tibia – Flat face that articulates with the lateral condyle of the tibia
Distal Epiphysis
- Lateral malleolus - distal expansion of the fibula
- Articular Face to Talus
Body (Diaphysis)
- Anterior Edge – thick and rough
- Interosseous border – interosseous crest
- Posterior Edge – starts at the apex and ends at the posterior edge of the lateral malleolus
- Medial Face – narrow and flat. Constitutes the interval between the anterior and interosseous borders
- Lateral Face – is convex and located between the leading and trailing edges
- Posterior Face – between the posterior and interosseous edges
The Fibula articulates with two bones: Tibia and Talus.
