temporal bone
It is a paired bone, very complex, it is important because inside it is the hearing aid.
It is divided into 3 parts:
|
scaly part
- Zygomatic Process – long arch that projects from the underside of the scale
- Mandibular Fossa – articulates with the condyle of the mandible
Tympanic part
- External Acoustic Meatus
Petrosa part (Pyramid)
- Styloid Process – sharp spine located on the underside of the temporal bone
- Mastoid Process – chronic projection that can vary in size and shape
- Internal Acoustic Meatus – gives passage to the facial, acoustic and intermediate nerve and the internal auditory branch of the basilar artery
- Stylomastoid foramen – located between the mastoid and styloid process
- Carotid Canal – gives passage to the internal carotid artery and the carotid nerve plexus
- Jugular fossa – houses the bulb of the internal jugular vein
The Temporal articulates with 5 bones: Occipital, Parietal, Zygomatic, Sphenoid and Mandible.
